About…Portrait Drawing

27 November 2006 173 views 6 Comments

Hi, I’m busy with stuff and hence has nothing much to show at the moment.

So I thought I’ll talk about portrait drawing. Lately, I started this graphic cartoon portrait service and for my animations, I usually transform the couple’s look into anime art. People commission me for their cartoon portrait drawing but some mistakenly thought that the cartoon will look exactly like them. The cartoon portrait I’ve drawn is kept to anime style, hence I only draw the client’s features in, but eyes are kept big, mouth and nose are kept small. Hence, it’s not possible to look exactly like the couple. They might have mistaken my art for cariature art, where features are kept the same but in distorted form. My cartoon style is anime style.

The reason I have chosen to do ‘anime-like’ is because I love this style, not because I do not know how to draw realistically. In fact, drawing realistically is easier than making real life features cartoony.

artXiaoDongThis is an old art of mine which I drew when I was about 17 years old. This singer’s picture (do you know who he is?) started as a practice but ended up alright so I laminated it. However, I don’t know why I gave him an eye bag on one eye but not the other. It’s not a good picture. =.=”

When I was 15-18 years old, I was very much into portrait pencil drawings. I have never attended any art classes on portraiture. All my artwork is done by practising and trying the basic shading techniques. I guess I have some natural talent in it. After learning pencil shading in general art classes in secondary 2, I started thinking maybe I could try to draw people’s portrait. Thus, I practised on ‘Zhou Hui Min’, a popular singer at that time and sent the picture to a student’s newspaper. It was published and I got more confident. Later, I started drawing my parents and my siblings. As I practiced more, I started giving my best friends their portrait art for their birthdays.

To me, a person’s face shows a lot of emotions. Therefore, I like drawing people smiling as they rarely smile in real life. It’s like I’m imprinting their smile forever on a paper and I could somehow feel them smiling back at me when I look at the art. This is the same reason why I love looking at photographs too. I’m amazed at how the positioning between the nose, mouth, eyes and eyebrows and the shape of features could change a person’s look and make him unique from the others. No two persons look the same in this world.

As I grew older, I didn’t have the time to do portrait drawings anymore. Gradually, I seemed to have lost my satisfaction in art and I’m quite rusty in this traditional drawing now. I’m glad now that I have a chance to do cartoon portraits for people through meowstudio. It’s definitely a challenge since now I’m not doing realistic portrait drawing but instead, I have to convert their faces into cartoon art yet still retain their features. Somehow it has become a unique technique of mine.

    Hello Cat,

You are really talented. From your artwork and your cartoon animation, you can really do well. I always envy ppl with artistic talent, specially ppl like you who can draw the face and the cartoon. They look alive.

Recently I saw alot of photos and I think it is really nice to catch hold of ppl smile. Specially those that are not posing for the camera. Alot of them are so nice.

Catherine, I thk I have said it many times but I do want to say it again “Jia You!”. Life is about perservance.

Jen: Ooh, you like drawing too? would love to see your art. Yup, eyes is the hardest. My favourite features are the eyes and hair. Once I draw them, the whole picture seems to come more alive.

Mei Zhen: Are you talking about journalistic photography? Yar, I like those photos too where the person is not directly posing for the camera but captured candidly. Heehee, thanks for the encouragement. I love collecting your ‘jia you’! I will continue to strive on. :)
